What’s To Expect This Summer
By: Van Jensen
The renovation of the Candler Park Playground has begun! Construction kicked off on April 16 with the demolition of the 20-plus-year-old playground, and work will continue for 10–12 weeks. The playground will be inaccessible during this period.
Funded through the generosity of neighbor donations, organizations, CPNO, Park Pride and the City of Atlanta, this $1 million project will result in a completely revamped play space with brand new equipment, designed by our partners at Perkins + Will.
The playground will include a large climbing structure, slides built into the hillside, shade sails, a functioning water fountain/bottle filler, and completely redone landscaping and plants.
There will be a walkway with donor bricks, and these will include the names of donors from the old bricks that were previously at the playground’s entrance, thanks to the generosity of neighbors who supported that effort.
Thank you to everyone who donated to support the new playground, and in particular to the following groups, without whom we would not have been able to complete the project:
- Atlanta Bond Fund / Atlanta city councilmember Amir Farokhi
- Atlanta Parks Department
- Candler Park Neighborhood Organization
- Park Pride
- The Waterfall Foundation
Neighbors are more than welcome to go to the playground area to watch the transformation take place. We just ask that everyone stay behind the orange fencing.
There will be construction equipment and trucks entering the space via the end of the roundabout, and any damage to the sidewalk will be replaced at the end of the project.
As we get closer to the project’s culmination, we’ll announce plans for a re-opening celebration. Currently, we’re scheduled to conclude work by July 17.
