Monthly Minutes – June 2025

June 16, 2025 By Allen Broyles

Date: June 16, 2025

1. Call to Order & Welcome

  • The meeting commenced with a welcome to all CPNO members and guests.
  • It was noted that the meeting was being recorded and would be sent out afterward.
  • Voting on substantive matters is typically conducted online; however, there were no votes scheduled for this month. If a motion were to arise, efforts would be made to address it with the current participants. Voting information can be found at park.org/vote after meetings.

2. Adoption of Agenda and Previous Minutes

  • The agenda and minutes from the previous meeting were adopted by unanimous consent, with no objections raised.

3. NPD Zone 6 Representative Update

  • The evening watch commander and Zone 6 representative, provided a brief update on crimes in the Candler Park neighborhood.
  • Crime Overview:
    • No violent crimes occurred in the past week; incidents were primarily property crimes.
    • A Hyundai was stolen on Josephine Street.
    • A phone was taken from a car’s center console after a good Samaritan offered assistance with a broken-down vehicle.
    • Four vehicle break-ins were reported: one on Candler Park Drive, one on Candler Street, one at “in place,” and one at Leonardo. In these instances, items such as purses (left overnight in the back seat and on the front seat) and a wallet (left in the center console while at the golf course) were stolen.
  • Prevention Recommendations:
    • Owners of Hyundai or Kia vehicles are strongly encouraged to obtain free car clubs from the Zone 6 precinct.
    • Residents are urged to avoid leaving valuables in plain sight within their vehicles, as even a brief absence can provide enough time for theft.
  • Officer provided his contact number: 404-772-1889, for any questions.

4. Infrastructure Committee Update – Christina (Chair)

  • The committee is awaiting a response regarding an “outward improvement element” application submitted to the city, with a meeting with City Council expected in June.
  • Crosswalk Improvements):
    • The committee is looking into purchasing “zebras” (small striped bumps) to replace the frequently damaged bollards at the crosswalk.
    • The “zebras” aim to slow down cars effectively without creating debris. They can be reinstalled with glue and screws.
    • Concerns about the turn being too tight for buses have been addressed by city insurance, confirming that the issue is driver speed, not the turn itself. The “zebras” will not damage cars but will encourage slower speeds.
  • Paint Touch-Ups:
    • The committee is working to schedule repainting and touch-ups for existing road markings, ideally at a time that does not require shutting down the entire intersection, which causes significant disruption. They discussed avoiding Fall Fest for this activity.
  • Recruitment:
    • The committee is seeking new members, particularly residents from Lake Clair, and individuals who frequently use McClendon Avenue (e.g., bikers, walkers, drivers) to gather diverse input on infrastructure projects.
  • Potential Stop Sign at Clifton:
    • An email was received regarding a potential stop sign at Clifton, and a resident will discuss this at the next month’s meeting. Community input is sought for this decision.
    • It was noted that stop signs, as demonstrated by the “Safer McClendon” initiative, are effective in slowing traffic and making areas safer. More information is available at safermlendon.org.
  • Road Sign Issues: For twisted or sideways road signs, residents should call 311.

5. Little Five Points Business Association / Cultural District Update – Kelly Stocks

  • Kelly Stocks, representing the Little Five Points Business Association, announced the formation of a new organization, the Little Five Points Cultural District, which now handles events, arts, and culture.
  • Upcoming Events:
    • July 4th: Potluck picnic at the Little Five Points Community Center from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
    • “Summer of Halloween” Series:
      • July: Tito’s Haunt, featuring special drinks at local bars.
      • July 19th: Monster Ball at Hudson Grill, including a costume contest and raffle items.
      • July 27th: Psychic Showcase in Davis Plaza.
      • August 3rd: Back to Ghoul Bash with trick-or-treating.
  • Event details will soon be available on their website. Kelly offered to leave her contact information in the chat.

6. Announcements & New Business

  • Easter Egg Hunt Candy: Extra candy is available for free to Page Avenue residents on a first-come, first-served basis. Contact Sydney for details.
  • Candler Park Forever: An initiative to help older Candler Park residents remain active in the community through activities like movies, book clubs, and dinners. The group welcomes participants of all ages and is seeking additional volunteers. Contact Lexa King for involvement.

7. Treasurer Report

  • The treasurer’s report indicated that the books are in good order, based on information provided by Melissa. No specific financial details were discussed.

8. Events & Calendar Discussion

  • A question was raised regarding scheduled music or other sizable events in Candler Park for the summer.
  • No comprehensive list of summer events was immediately available.
  • Confirmed Upcoming Events:
    • Golf Tournament: September 20th.
    • Candler Park Fall Fest: October 4th and 5th.
    • Tour of Homes: September 27th, from noon to 6:00 PM (the weekend before Fall Fest).
  • The calendar on the CPNO website is updated with Fall Fest and Tour of Homes, and possibly the golf tournament.
  • It was suggested that residents can search city permits for other events that might cause traffic in the park.
  • Action Item: Future meeting agendas will include a link to the events page.

9. Adjournment

  • The meeting was adjourned, noted as potentially the fastest meeting conducted. The next meeting will be held the following month.
